Every carrier TMS claims ELD integration. But "integrated" hides three very different architectures — and the differences matter for dispatch efficiency, compliance accuracy, and daily operations.

Three Levels of ELD Integration

Level 1: Manual/CSV Upload

The dispatcher exports HOS data from the ELD portal and imports it into the TMS. This is technically "integration" but it's barely better than paper logs. Data is always stale, and the process is time-consuming.

Platforms at this level: TruckLogics, ITS Dispatch (for some ELDs)

Level 2: API Sync (Batch)

The TMS pulls HOS data from the ELD via API on a scheduled interval — typically every 15-60 minutes. This is a significant improvement over manual upload, but data can be up to an hour old when dispatchers see it.

Platforms at this level: Truckbase, AscendTMS, Tailwind, Rose Rocket, Alvys

Level 3: Real-Time Native Integration

The TMS receives live ELD data via webhooks or streaming API, updating driver status in real-time. The dispatch board reflects current HOS down to the minute, enabling AI-powered dispatch optimization based on live availability.

Platforms at this level: Strivie (all major ELDs), McLeod (PeopleNet), Trimble (PeopleNet)

Why Real-Time Matters

Consider a dispatcher assigning a 400-mile load at 2:00 PM. With batch sync, the HOS data might show the driver has 8 hours available — but that was at 1:00 PM, and the driver has been driving since. With real-time integration, the dispatcher sees the driver has 7 hours left right now, and the TMS can factor that into the assignment recommendation.

Strivie's AI dispatch engine uses real-time HOS data as one of dozens of inputs for load optimization. The system won't recommend a driver who will run out of hours mid-delivery — a situation that batch-sync platforms can't reliably prevent.

The takeaway: "ELD integrated" is not a binary. Ask your TMS vendor which level of integration they support for your specific ELD, and whether the data is real-time or batch. The answer matters more than you think.
